DSR Dessert Parlour, OUG
December 10, 2019
What happens when the owners of orchards that cultivate durians, ginger and various fruits in Raub and Bentong decide to open a cafe? Delicious intrigue ensues - start with DSR Dessert Parlour's trio of tarts, one topped with pleasurably pungent pastry cream, made with pure D24 durian pulp; the next with lively passionfruit flesh; the final with savoury, ginger-sharpened stewed chicken (a very worthwhile RM10 for three).
If you like your durian desserts mild and mellow, the durian mousse cake is a safe bet, light and likable (RM18), though we hear the durian crepe cake is more potently flavoured (unfortunately, it was out of stock when we visited).
Bentong ginger, on the other hand, is an ingredient that we love unrestrained - thankfully, the Bentong ginger 'bang milk' packs plenty of aromatic spice in every spoonful, crafted with milk and ginger juice, with soothing textures evoking tau foo fah (RM9). Partner that with the ginger milk tea, silky and sultry (RM6).
DSR (fun fact: DSR stands for Durian Sudah Runtuh) is currently experimenting with off-menu specials; if they're available, order the ginger ice cream and the durian ice cream, both exhibiting top-notch smoothness, with gentle but unmistakable flavours. DSR also plans to offer ginger cookies for the Lunar New Year, so that's another reason to return, particularly with a bumper crop of other temptations like chicken floss durian toast, durian cendol and ginger lo mai gai to harvest from the menu.
