Royal Canton, DC Mall: Dim Sum & Wine Pairing Brunch

If the words 'siu mai' and 'Sauvignon Blanc' sound like they belong in the same sentence to you, keep an eye on DC Mall's Royal Canton, which recently hosted what seemed like KL's first-ever dim sum and wine pairing brunch. It was a one-off affair that married Chinese nibbles with French wines, but the reception was rousing enough that the restaurant hopes to soon stage a few return engagements of this unorthodox union (update: the next session will be Sunday, July 1).
For this experience, Royal Canton collaborated with Delia Wines, helmed by French-and-Korean husband-and-wife team Laurent Robert and Chaebok 'Sook' Kim-Robert, whose passions for wine run deep and true (Robert himself is a Champagne maker). Sook presided over the pairings with vivacious flair, delving into the stories and characteristics of each wine, guiding us on how to best enjoy harmoniously orchestrated duets like the opening salvo of Royal Canton's plump-with-prawns har gao and chive dumpling with a seductively full-bodied Domaine Des Poncetys Saint-Veran Les Climats 2016 with ripe peach notes.
Chopsticks clacked and glasses clinked as course after course of warm, tender dim sum - steamed spare ribs, enoki mushroom bean curd rolls and crispy sakura prawn bean cake - were brought fresh from the kitchen, each one expertly and elegantly matched with a distinctive wine, flowing from a crisp Sauvignon Blanc to a rounded Rose, harmoniously bringing together Cantonese and Gallic traditions in a leisurely, nearly three-hour Sunday meal.
From the first sip to the final chew, the theme of discovery was a delicious constant, with this voyage through various vintages bringing new flavour perspectives to comforting creations like a bacon-and-scallion pancake, Iberico pork neck with glutinous rice, and even mango sago.
