Softcore @ Bandar Sunway

September 2, 2015

Softcore delivers what its name suggests, dishing out an intriguingly diverse range of lava cakes with molten centres. This is one of Bandar Sunway's brightest, most cheerful & promising new cafes, helmed by chef Tommy, Gerald & Sham, a young & enthusiastic team whose resumes include stints at respected Singapore-based outlets like Brussels Sprouts & Original Sin.

Softcore's distinctive desserts seem set to flow uninhibitedly all over social media - you'll find elegantly plated molten cakes (made with Callebaut Belgian chocolate) with a variety of fillings & accompaniments, like this white choc cake with passion fruit jam, berry coulis & house-made ice cream (usually vanilla, but the cafe had run out of that flavour when we visited). For a surprisingly low price of RM13 nett, it's worth trying - eat the cake together with the fruits for more nuanced flavours & textures.

Other temptations include a matcha & white chocolate cake with candied calamansi, red bean paste & ice cream (RM15; also eat the cake with the accompaniments for best effect), plus cakes with peanut butter & filo banana fritter, or with salted caramel, popcorn & butterscotch, or with dark chocolate & cherry jam. Tommy's still tweaking some of the recipes to produce more playful dynamics, & of course, he also plans to steadily introduce other cakes (a salted egg yolk filling is in the works).

Encouragingly, Softcore also serves enjoyable savouries - we like this grilled cheese sandwich that's bountifully packed with tender, tasty cubes of pan-fried marinated chicken breast, balanced with a creamy mix of egg whites, coriander & sriracha mayo for a subtle spiciness - all in crusty kitchen-made toast bread for a satisfying meal served with a salad & fries for RM19. Other grilled cheese sandwiches here include fillings of braised beef brisket or scrambled eggs & button mushrooms.

Also set to be a signature Softcore success: Parmesan creme brulee (RM11), a version that targets cheese fans, tinged with thyme & a base of caramelised onions for a sweetness that complements the cheese's naturally mellow saltiness. Wash down with cold brew coffee (RM15, served with ice cream), milkshakes, tea or complimentary cucumber-citrus water.
