Pause Cafe, Choo Cheng Khay Road
March 28, 2019
Pause Cafe is well worth a full stop, transforming a decades-old Kampung Attap apartment into an inviting space that feels as much a home as an eatery.
The menu merits exploration too - the food seems fuelled by time-honoured nostalgia, while beverages showcase modern flair.
Rice meals are the top temptation - our order emerged with fresh, flavoursome chicken marinated in hua diao wine with garlic and chillies; beautifully aromatic, it's the sort of comfort-food lunch we could savour over and over again (RM17). Another option that sounds like a thorough triumph (but had run out when we visited) is rice with pork lard, minced pork and an onsen egg.
Drinks are playful but very capably executed - the Sober Tonic is chilled rejuvenation in a glass, blending espresso with tonic water and ginger-spiked syrup, garnished with a dried orange slice and rosemary (RM15), while YinYang-Taichi is espresso balanced with red tea, frothed with milk, for a fragrant latte with well-calibrated nuances of both coffee and tea (RM15).
