Outcast Coffee KL
August 21, 2016
A compelling cocoon of calm, a secluded slice of serenity: This month, KL welcomes a space that's sandwiched amid terrace homes across the street from a neighbourhood playground, serving cakes & coffee in a leaf-shrouded sanctuary. If you're restless for a great, green escape from the urban jungle, contact Outcast Coffee at [email protected] to find out more.
Seemingly a forgotten alley transformed into a fairyland pathway, this was once a house like any other. But if you peek now past the trunks & branches that camouflage this address, beyond the vine-ravelled brick facade & the pebbled entrance, a veiled oasis beckons, with surroundings both soothing & seductive, simultaneously sunny & shaded, completely refurbished in a clean break from its past, flourishing with furnishing by local craftspeople Kedai Bikin. Upstairs, Airbnb rental lodgings are in the works, but below, it's a part-time coffee bar as well as a potentially versatile events venue where cultural soirees & artistic powwows might seem inevitable. These walls should soon have stories to tell.
Outcast Coffee is a roaming pop-up service; it has requested that this particular location not be publicly specified for now, but if you're here, ask for an Asian-inflected piece of cake - perhaps the pandan Gula Melaka or the jackfruit Bundt - paired with a coconut latte, made with a La Marzocco espresso machine that's portable enough to be packed up & taken wherever Outcast Coffee next lays its hat & calls its home (the pop-up's name reflects its founder's feelings of being a touch outside KL's coffee mainstream - though with the callow, capricious cliques that commandeer the scene, there are certainly far worse fates).
