Bandung comes to Bandar Kinrara: Cibiuk is a familiar restaurant chain in Indonesia's West Java province, specialising in Sundanese signatures. The brand boasts several branches in Malaysia as well, including this one in Puchong.
The highlight is the complimentary smorgasbord of sambal to complement the meal: Customers can choose from the mildly spicy sambal terasi and sambal kicap, the more fiery sambal mangga and sambal tempe, the blazing-hot sambal jeletot, and the supremely punishing sambal kuring and sambal cili ijo.
It's fun to sample each sambal to see which is your favourite: Ours is the beautifully textured sambal tempe, terrific enough to relish even on its own. All in all, this is a thorough treat for sambal fanatics.
The menu is extensive: For fish, the tilapia is sourced from the rivers of Malaysia's Pahang state, fried to fan out in the presentation that's inextricably linked to West Java, with its crisp skin yielding to tender flesh, served with moreish battered greens for a worthwhile order (RM30.10).
For an introduction to traditional recipes that might not often be spotted in the Klang Valley, have the karedok (RM5.90; a raw vegetable salad in a sweetly creamy peanut sauce) and batagor (RM9.90; crunchy dumplings stuffed with savoury fish sausages).
However, the nasi timbel rice platter can be safely skipped, since it might be the least memorable offering, served with fried kampung chicken and salted fish that leave little impression (RM16.80). For grains, it's better to order the far more flavoursome nasi liwet, aromatically steamed with coconut milk and chicken broth (RM3.80). Wash down with soursop juice (RM7.50).
