Banglo 289: Classic Malay cooking for lunch & Ramadan buka puasa in the city centre
March 6, 2024
In the past year, Banglo 289 has become the city centre's crave-worthy destination for an authentic Malay culinary experience.
Whether you're seeking a soulful spread of traditional treats for lunch or a vast variety of classic cuisine for Ramadan dinners, Banglo 289 beckons in a beautiful bungalow with both air-conditioned and alfresco spaces.
We revisited Banglo 289 recently to sample its latest sensations for the afternoon crowd - the restaurant was bustling on a weekday by noon, a testament to its tempting cooking.
For lunch, customers can choose from a sweeping selection of rich, robust recipes, freshly served on the counters, representing time-honoured flavours.
The Ayam Kampung Goreng (RM10) illustrates Banglo 289's expertise with surprisingly moist, tender flesh, packing a savoury kick in every mouthful.
The Daging Salai Masak Lemak (RM14.50; also available as chicken) is fiercely fiery, for a tongue-tingling triumph of tender, chunky beef.
Sambal Paru (RM6) showcases an addictively crisp crunch, saturated in spicy heat.
For a powerfully pungent pleasure, the Ikan Patin Tempoyak (RM18) features potently fermented sauce, complementing the moist, flaky fish. A firm favourite for many fans!
Ikan Bakar is also a highlight, punchy and aromatic, perfectly grilled on banana leaves with fragrant spices. Possibilities include crisp-skinned Siakap Bakar (RM30), Pari Bakar, Tilapia Bakar and Sotong Bakar.
There's truly something for everyone - Ikan Tenggiri Asam Pedas, Pucuk Paku Pakis Masak Lemak, Goreng Goreng (Ayam Goreng, Tempe Goreng and Ikan Kembong Goreng), Sup Ayam and Sayur Stir Fry. We could eat here throughout the week and still have more to try!
Sides and condiments galore: Ulam-Ulaman, Aneka Kerabu (such as Kerabu Udang and Kerabu Mangga), Peria Katak, Jantung Pisang, Ikan Masin, and a smorgasbord of sambals and sauces (including sambal tempoyak, budu and cencalok).
Desserts comprise a mouthwatering medley of Malay favourites, including Seri Muka, Bubur Pulut Hitam, Bubur Jagung, Pulut Mangga and colourful Kuih-Muih.
Also look out for the Pisang Goreng with playful toppings that range from milk and honey to cheese butterscotch.
Quench your thirst on hot, humid days with the soothingly chilled Watermelon Lychee (RM9) and Apple Asam Boi (RM9).
