Wood & Wheat, Tropicana Avenue

August 5, 2018

Pizzas prepared with Asian pizzazz: Wood & Wheat promises cheesy-crusty comfort from a Malaysian perspective, pushing out flavours that not only include familiar favourites like Rendang and Masala but imaginative surprises such as Kam Heong and Pasembur too.

This fusion fun isn't a mere gimmick though, since the pizzas are crafted with mindful care - Wood & Wheat's founders built their own brick oven, fuelled by natural firewood. Every piece of dough that enters this fiery furnace is hand-stretched and rested for at least six hours to keep it relatively light, the ideal base for robust sauces conceived in Wood & Wheat's kitchen.

The meticulous process belies the sense of playfulness that permeates this space, where customers can munch on their pies beneath a colourful sky of pizza-shaped lights while the soundtrack pulsates with classic 1980s bops.

Wood & Wheat's hefty 12-inch pizzas mostly cost RM30-RM40 each, their eight slices spilling over wooden serving boards. But the best way to savour more varieties in one round is to order the Half-Halfs, which feature two different flavours on each pizza (RM42).

If Wood & Wheat's Kam Heong Royale rings a bell for your taste buds, that might be because you've tasted the kam heong sandwich at Section 17's Good Blue Men cafe - Wood & Wheat is Good Blue Men's pizza-loving spin-off.

The signature kam heong sauce is blazed up with 13 herbs and spices, coating each bite of chicken on thin-crusted but hearty slices topped further with dried sea salt shrimp, dried chilli peppers, mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and arugula.

The pizza we enjoyed the most turned out to be the vegetarian choice, Pasembur, bringing a bit of Penang to this part of PJ, bearing a Gurney Drive inspiration, sweetish with the distinctive pasembur sauce, made richly textured with kyuri, shredded jicama, carrots, fried tofu, nachos and almond nibs.

If you like rich, potently punchy pizzas, the Rendang-licious and the Fiery Masala should placate your palates, offered with your choice of meat (chicken, lamb, or beef meatballs). A dessert pizza (RM15) is also available, all sugared up with green and red apples and raisins with Korean honey citron and Malaysian pandan lotus pastes. Wood & Wheat's fare is obviously not meant for weight-watchers, so go big and indulge in a bubblegum-flavoured milkshake (RM15) and candy lime soda (RM11).
