Nyonya Pakay Bunga, Taman Overseas Union

November 28, 2021

Named for the classic Nyonya song, OUG's new Nyonya Pakay Bunga deserves to be a contemporary choice for Malaccan Peranakan fare, heartfelt and heartwarming, hearkening to times when Malacca was more sleepy hollow than tourist hotspot.

Ayam Pongteh, our benchmark for beautiful Nyonya cooking, aces the test here, brimming with four whole chicken drumsticks and thighs, irreproachably tender and smooth, rounded out with generous portions of potatoes and carrots, soulful and soy-savoury, for a reasonable RM22.90.

The Ikan Cencaru Sumbat rice platter (RM15.90), another nostalgic dish, features fish stuffed with enough tongue-scorching sambal to slay a small dragon. Complete your lunch with Kangkung Belacan (RM13.90) - from poultry to seafood to vegetables, Nyonya Pakay Bunga's food tastes fresh and well-sourced, exactly how a meticulous Nyonya matriarch would want it.

Nyonya Pakay Bunga
1, Jalan Hujan, Taman Overseas Union, Kuala Lumpur. Open Tuesday-Saturday, 11am-530pm.
