Yugami Steamboat @ Sri Petaling

July 28, 2015

This hotpot hangout is steaming up Sri Petaling with specialities of fish-based broths that linger pleasurably in the memory.

We're instant fans of both the clear fish base & the curry fish alternative (RM29.90 for a small pot, RM39.90 for a large one; splitting of flavours is possible), brimming with fresh grouper slices & veggies. Each conveys clean, well-tuned nuances for a reliable foundation - in a pinch, we'd pick the curry, since its creamy richness makes each spoonful more satisfyingly robust.

The selection of meat & more to toss into the pot is predictably solid - special mention for the pork neck & the lamb (RM15.80 each), sterling specimens of succulence. You'll also find everything from house-made squid balls that supply a textured chew (RM7.80 for four) to commercially produced lobster balls (RM6.80, a budget-friendly possibility), juicy Taiwanese sausages (RM6.80) to crispy fried fish skin (RM9.80), yam & pumpkin to watercress (RM5.80 each), century eggs (RM3) to seaweed (RM4.30); the menu goes on & on - prawns, jellyfish, la-la, abalone, crab sticks, tonnes of tofu & all manner of mushrooms.

With good components comes good results - a meal here is an enjoyable experience of trying out a variety of tasty ingredients that work well for soup-slurping & stomach-stuffing. Don't skip the excellent sauces - Yugami's attention to detail ensures that everything on the table should be lapped up.

The restaurant also serves recipes like salted egg yolk sotong (RM19.80), Hong Kong-inspired 'typhoon shelter' garlic prawns (RM31.80) & basic fried rice (RM8.90), but our admiration is solely for the steamboat. Many thanks to Yugami for hosting us.
