What's On Tap, Mont Kiara

April 21, 2019

This sleek new cafe brings the 'Modbar' minimalist design aesthetic to Mont Kiara, serving coffee out of chrome taps, concealing espresso machines under the counter to ease the sense of separation between baristas and their customers.

The configuration might evoke beer on tap, but what flows out of these workstations are the building blocks for long blacks and flat whites. The house blend for espresso-based beverages will likely change weekly, with the current blend comprising Brazilian, Colombian and Guatemalan varietals. Black coffee starts at RM6 for 30ml, coffee with milk at RM11 for an 8oz cup.

The Italian-manufactured Modbar system is also efficiently applied to automated pour-over processes (RM14 for an Ethiopian Heirloom filter) for smooth, light-bodied sipping. Prices are reasonable considering the costliness of this programmable system.

While the set-up might seem sterile for some, the service crew exudes enough warmth to make What's On Tap feel welcoming. A signature drink like the Orange Nitro Fizz (RM18; nitro coffee with cold-pressed citrus juice, honey and coconut nectar) also helps the space feel like a cool laboratory where playful experiments are possible.
