Tiem Ca Phe Viet Nam @ Jalan Perak
April 21, 2015
If you've ever been trapped in traffic on Jalan Perak before turning into Jalan Sultan Ismail, you may have noticed Tiem Ca Phe Viet Nam on a corner past the back of Life Centre. Most folks might brush this place off, believing it's one of this street's seedier stops, but it's actually worth a venture for a variety of Vietnamese dishes, including some not very often spotted in KL.
From tangy-spicy snails (RM12.90) to steamed cockles, no-frills noodle soup with beef or crab (RM12.90) to prawn salads & spring rolls, fried quail (RM6.50) to chicken with glutinous rice (RM15.50), Tiem Ca Phe Viet Nam's food tastes capably prepared, though it understandably pales in contrast to the more vibrant flavours that emanate from Ho Chi Minh City's stalls.
Not for everyone, but we're always happy to have 'hot vit lon' (RM6.50), the notorious fertilised duck egg. Liquid courage is available if you require some before downing an egg or three; these comprise the more mature chicks - a bit closer to three weeks old - favoured by many Vietnamese, complete with unmistakable beaks, claws & tender bones.
