The Food Parlor @ Kelana Jaya, Village House @ Casa Tropicana & Line Clear Nasi Kandar @ Kampung Baru

February 9, 2016

From Malacca: The Food Parlor has its roots in Malaysia's historic state - the parents of the outlet's co-founder Cheryl reputedly run an eatery in Malacca's Portuguese Settlement, so it's natural that this casual venue specialises in cherished Eurasian family recipes that Malaccans know well. You'll find fairly priced, fuss-free rice sets (RM12.50-RM14.50) that emphasise chicken pongteh (respectable), ambilek long beans curry & captain's curry. For a fun Kristang-Italian twist, try the Devil's Spaghetti (RM14.50), a rich, saucy pasta with Devil's Curry gravy, tossed with chunks of chicken, onions & parmesan.

From Kelantan: Village House is a kopitiam helmed by a family from Malaysia's north-east, with a focus on authentic rice recipes that range from nasi ayam percik (RM13.90, with a whole flame-grilled chicken leg in coconut sauce) to nasi bungkus Kak Wok (RM8.90, featuring firm, steaming-hot rice packed in paper with small, chopped pieces of fried chicken, pungent sambal chilli sauce & light, sweetish gulai gravy - altogether addictive), as well as great-grain mainstays such as nasi kerabu, nasi dagang, nasi paprik, nasi ulam & nasi lemak. Special thanks to reader Andrew Toh for pointing out this place to us.

From Penang: Line Clear has long been one of the northern island's most popular haunts for nasi kandar, its heritage reaching back to before World War II. Its legacy now extends to KL with a new branch in Kampung Baru - an instant hit, with scores of patrons patiently queuing for half an hour during peak periods. We reached the end of the efficiently manned line & had a plate of steamed white rice heaped with fish roe (irreproachable), squid roe (soft but mercifully not mushy), fried chicken (the breast meat was relatively bland) & a large prawn (fresh, firm & fleshy), flooded with a jumble of spicy-savoury gravies for RM29. The curries could be more robust, but this feels familiar enough to merit honourable comparisons to nasi kandar in a Penang alley.
