The Coffee Academics @ Scotts Square, Singapore

December 23, 2015

The Coffee Academics opened its first full-fledged outpost outside Hong Kong this month, launching a 'sensory playground' in Singapore's Scotts Square mall. It's a sprawling cafe with multiple 'stations' including an espresso bar, tea bar & brew bar. Intriguing beverages include a latte laced with raw agave nectar & sprinkled with black pepper ($7.50; raise the cup to your nose; you'll smell the pepper before tasting it, furnishing a curious moment). Try the hand-crafted coffee too; served in a wine glass, the medium-roast Kenyan caracoli bean house blend ($14 for ice drip) fulfils its pledge of bitter-sweet complexities.

The food is enticing, engaging & enjoyable as well - creamy scrambled eggs on sourdough toast are enhanced with a hearty infusion of fleshy crayfish, caviar & beurre noisette butter sauce ($23). We also like the grilled beef taco, brimming with pinkish cuts of juicy meat, bolstered by heaps of guacamole, mozzarella, tomato salsa, sour cream & jalapeno on a soft tortilla ($19).
