Meat-filled meal or meat-free? Either is possible at Solaris Dutamas; for the former, The Beato Steakhouse is now beefing up this complex, while for vegetarians, the freshest option might be Beyond Veggie, operated by Secret Recipe.
First up, Beato: From porterhouses to prime ribs, there's no lack of Aussie-bred options here, with Beato's signature trio of mustards _ regular, wholegrain & sweet.
The Beato's steaks cost between RM25 & RM45 per 100 grams. Not bad, not bad at all.
Also tasty: sliced beef marinated with soy sauce, paired with chew-worthy barley risotto.
The Beato will also serve its own dry-aged steaks in the weeks to come. Sounds good.
February 2014 update: The Beato now has another branch at Bangsar, specifically a first-floor shoplot at 24, Telawi 3.
The Beato's own dry-aged beef is the highlight here, with a wide variety of weights to choose from.
Bread rolls with a soft, lovely combo of butter & olive tapenade.
The star of our show: A chunk of rib-eye beef, 426 grams, at RM38 per 100 grams.
Supremely easy to slice through, with solid flavour & a nice, crusty exterior.
Side dishes include a very generous portion of sweet potato fries (RM18).
Horseradish & dijon & wholegrain mustard accompaniments.
Wine is available by the bottle & the glass The Beato has one of Bangsar's best service teams, really friendly & efficient.
Next up: Secret Recipe Beyond Veggie, a surprisingly comfy cafe.
Mushroom satay manages to taste as fleshy as chicken. Pleasant peanut sauce too.
Pai tee. Refreshingly different from regular Nyonya top hats, these seem to be stuffed with a chilled, crunchy salad mix of green apples & tomatoes.
Red yeast mee sua soup (RM14). Highly recommended, thanks to the hot, savory broth & tremendous wealth of toppings, including choy sum, cabbage, oyster mushrooms, carrots, broccoli, baby corn, bean curd skin & cauliflower.
Fans of stinky food will fall for this: Tempe coated in sambal petai (RM15). Pungent pleasure.
Potato leaves provide simple satisfaction. Other offerings here range from "nam yue" fried vermicelli to braised kuey teow with bitter gourd, spaghetti aglio olio with sun-dried tomatoes to pizza with pesto sauce.
Since it's Secret Recipe, there must be cakes, but with a twist here. We love the softly smooth, egg-eliminated one with chantilly cream & pistachios with layers of vanilla sponge. Have it with the Booster Juice that combines carrots, beetroots & oranges.
Secret Recipe Beyond Veggie also has another branch at Tropicana City Mall.
