Tetel Bario @ Seri Kembangan

April 11, 2015

Tetel Bario specialised in something singular: Cooking from Sarawak's Kelabit highlands, with smoked meat & wild veggies in recipes that strove for authenticity. Sadly, this outlet closed recently, but we hope its founders will be back in action someday.

Tetel Bario, which was also confusingly known as D'Saveur in some circles, was a destination for delicacies like 'umai udang' (raw prawns marinated with lime), 'labo belatuh' (salted venison) & 'ikan berisi' (terubuk fish flakes, riddled with tiny bones).

From 'ayam pansuh' (bamboo-cooked chicken with tapioca leaves) to 'pucuk ubi tumbuk' vegetables, Tetel Bario's food tasted well-prepared - portions were not big, but prices were low; a set meal with rice, three side dishes & a drink cost RM10-RM12.

Other highlights here included 'nuba laya' (leaf-wrapped mashed rice), steamed Bario rice, Sarawak laksa & 'cakoi' crullers.
