Salt & Charcoal, Ginger & Flowers, Witty & Oaky

January 1, 2016

A restaurant specialising in Italian & Japanese cooking - specifically, wood-fired pizza & yakiniku-style meat - Salt x Charcoal showcased a singular but short-lived concept. We visited in early 2015, trying out an interesting pizza topped with bacon, potatoes & mayo, as well as DIY grilled pork neck, shoulder & tongue, plus several snacks like salt-&-pepper calamari & chicken, but within a matter of months, the outlet was permanently shut. Salt x Charcoal was on Bangkung Row in Bangsar.

Another now-closed casualty of 2015, Ginger & Flowers in Petaling Jaya's Section 16 neighbourhood was a cross between a cafe & a boutique, with a playful imagination that buoyed its cooking, infusing Japanese flourishes like mentaiko to spread on slices of baguette & onsen tamago to partner with pancakes. We wish this place could have remained in fashion a little longer.

Witty & Oaky (named for its two friendly founders' nicknames) was a charming cafe in Kuchai Lama, with welcoming & humorous personal touches throughout its thoughtfully decorated space ((loved the big teddy bear). The cakes & coffee were pleasant too; we hope Witty & Oaky's owners have moved on to greener pastures.
