ŌNO, Petaling Jaya

The story of ŌNO unfolds this Friday, co-authored by top Malaysian baristas-turned-roasters and matcha purveyors. Choose your own adventure with speciality coffee, matcha or both - the outcome is sure to satisfy at ŌNO's first chapter in SS2 Petaling Jaya.
ŌNO describes itself as a destination 'where two worlds collide' - it offers a crash course in how coffee and matcha make for delicious drinks and distinctive desserts, harnessing the finesse of its founders, who separately run Curate Coffee Roasters and Niko Neko Matcha.
Modern Japanese inspirations abound across ŌNO's meals, with sandos as the scrumptious star.
Sink your teeth into savoury ones, thickly stuffed with irresistibly juicy chicken katsu, blue cheese sauce with a spicy tang, and crisp cabbage in pillowy shokupan milk bread (RM24), or their sweet cousins, layered with smoky charcoal-roasted Tsubaki houjicha cream, red bean paste and house-made orange confit (RM16).
French toast and Spanish flan also enjoy a coffee-and-matcha makeover, the former turned gorgeously green with Yuri matcha, partnered with Ethiopia Yirgacheffe coffee cream and gula Melaka sauce (RM26), the latter lovably infused with Ethiopia Yirgacheffe coffee to bring a floral-nutty uplift to its creamy vanilla bean base (RM16).
ŌNO's colourful signature beverages call out to be immortalised on Instagram, spanning the Hanazono (Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Dumerso G1 cold brew with green apple, yuzu puree, orange slice, lime and rosemary), Kajyu-en (Ajisai matcha with strawberry puree, lychee, rose syrup, lime and soda water), and the best of both worlds, a two-tiered treat of carbonated Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Dumerso G1 cold brew topped with Ren ceremonial matcha cream.
But what we'd return for are the beautifully crafted basics, from medium-roast houjicha to mixed-heirloom flat whites with oat milk to The Champion's Reserve filter coffee, specially selected by two-time Malaysian Brewer's Cup champion Shaun Liew.
