Mikey's Original New York Pizza has launched its second outpost in Solaris Dutamas, less than eight months after becoming one of Bangsar's biggest smashes of 2014, serving pizzas by the slice perfected through consummate passion & experience.
This new branch retains Mikey's signature look, with soul & style to spare. It's the closest we'll get to NYC in KL; the walls serve as a nostalgic homage to owner Michael Helfman's home city - Gotham newspaper clippings headlining World War II's end, man's first walk on the moon & Joe DiMaggio's death share a thoughtfully curated space not only with Broadway playbills & old maps but also Helfman's own personal photographs of the streets & skyscrapers in The City That Never Sleeps.
The sense of authenticity & distinctive character extends to the pizzas, crafted by Andrew Bellucci with an artisan's pride. All the Bangsar favourites are accounted for - the pepperoni-heavy Tony Soprano, to Mikey's Favourite (with kitchen-made meatballs from a 70-year-old family recipe), to a chicken pizza with buffalo sauce & blue cheese dressing. Prices range between RM8.88 & RM15.88 per slice. Whole pizzas clock in between RM59.88 & RM88.88 - one pizza is enough to feed four.
Even if you've tried most of Mikey's pizzas, it's still worth returning regularly for the Pizza of the Month - December's special is the Loco Mexicano, a very tasty creation that's loaded with Mexican-seasoned beef, salsa, nacho cheese sauce, jalapeno peppers, sour cream, cilantro, mozzarella & cheddar cheese. RM15.88 per slice, RM88.88 for an 18-inch, eight-slice whole.
Both the Bangsar & Solaris Dutamas branches offer delivery to surrounding neighbourhoods, typically within 45 minutes after you've phoned in your order. It's a worthwhile alternative to the more familiar commercial pizza chains - everything from the crust to the toppings taste a notch above mass-market.
For another first-in-Malaysia triumph, try the Chocolate Chip Pizza - a soft-baked dessert that's best served warm, for a chocolatey richness that melts in the mouth. One slice (RM8.88) can be shared by two customers, while a whole 'pizza' (RM59.88) could work well as a unique substitute for a birthday cake. To be officially available by the end of this week.
The Philly Cheesesteak (RM19.88) ranks among KL's best, bursting with tender hand-chopped Aussie rib-eye, grilled with onions & peppers, topped with yellow American cheese in a kitchen-baked hero roll. Meaty-gooey greatness, very flavourful - the sort of sandwich you can really sink your teeth into.
It's not 100 percent New York here though - the West Coast is represented by Oregon-brewed Rogue Ales, marking Mikey's welcome shift from Budweisers to craft beers.
