Mumzy Lady's @ Sri Hartamas & Origin Cafe @ Mayang Jaya

February 6, 2015

Need nasi lemak? Mumzy Lady's, a new Hartamas hangout helmed by a cordial couple serving home-cooked fare, can help.

Mumzy Lady's selection changes daily, with food prepared in the morning to placate office workers who stroll into this cafe throughout the day. On some afternoons, you'll find soto ayam here, or maybe assam laksa or mee siam. We were welcomed by a big pot of warm nasi lemak, alongside accompaniments like ayam goreng & ayam masak kicap.

A plate with the essentials - fried chicken, egg, shrimp sambal, kangkung, ikan bilis, cucumber & peanuts - costs RM7, hitting the right notes for flavour & fragrance. Honest cooking, likely honed through years of experience in feeding family & friends.

Need more nasi lemak? Sure - here's a look at Origin, an Asian cafe in Taman Mayang Jaya where Malaysia's national dish shares the spotlight with the likes of Korean noodles, Chinese ginger chicken & Japanese teriyaki chicken.

Origin offers a basic, surprise-free rendition of nasi lemak with chicken curry that might not necessarily leave a lasting impression (RM8.90 for the set). Contemporary coffee is available, with lattes & flat whites clocking in at RM8 each.

Need even more nasi lemak? OK, here's one more for the road - Sri Melaka, a long-established favourite at Amcorp Mall.

After all these decades, Sri Melaka knows what it's doing, of course, whipping up hearty plates of well-executed nasi lemak with chicken, sotong & mutton rendang (RM15 for the rice & all three side dishes) that can be savoured with everything from sambal petai (RM18) & daun keledek goreng belacan (RM19) to curry laksa (RM11) & kerabu mee hoon (RM10).
