Mimi Nguyen Vietnamese Restaurant @ Puchong & Cafe 9 Taste Of Thai @ Petaling Jaya

August 3, 2016

Vietnamese pop songs that sound like a blast from the 1980s flood the air at Puchong's Mimi Nguyen Cafe, setting the mood for a sweeping feast of Hanoi street fare. Start with hot vit lon - the duck embryo is served in two styles here, boiled (RM4.50) or fried with a savoury tamarind sauce (RM10.80 for two eggs).

Our favourite orders at Mimi Nguyen include the fried quail (RM9.80; juicy & flavoursome), pho (RM11.80; one of the Klang Valley's more satisfying renditions, relatively speaking), braised pork & eggs simmered in coconut juice (RM8.80; beautifully luscious), melon soup stuffed with minced pork (RM8.80; comfort food) & long melon soup with shrimp (RM8.80; soul food). The only caveat is that the kitchen can seem too liberal in its penchant for sodium.

The caramelised snakehead fish in claypot (RM10.80) & deep-fried catfish with rice (RM12.80) are both notable for their tender flesh, though neither is the top temptation here. Skip the banh mi, which lacks the vibrant dimensions of truly fulfilling sandwiches, & the pork rolls, essentially luncheon meat.

Mimi Nguyen Cafe
J-01-04 Jalan PPK 1 Taman Kinrara, Puchong. Daily, 1030am-1030pm; closed on selected Mondays. Tel: 016-354-6581

Our visit to Cafe 9 was quite awhile back, but we had an enjoyable dinner, with interesting, well-prepared dishes: rice congee in a melon broth with chicken & glass noodles wrapped in melon; pad see ew stir-fried noodles; hard-boiled eggs in sweet sauce; chicken wings stuffed with glass noodles & minced chicken meat; crispy rice with chicken & peanut dip; dark soup noodles with chicken drumstick; & massaman chicken curry. Cafe 9 Taste of Thai endures at 27, Jalan 17/45, Petaling Jaya.
