Mars @ Kota Damansara, Gold Bar @ Tropicana Avenue, Bliss @ Sri Hartamas & Spitalfield's @ Atria

April 18, 2016

Mars orbits Kota Damansara with European-focused plates of Spanish sausages, seafood risotto & Iberico pork cooked straightforwardly with salt, bolstered by a galaxy of wines from around the world - a reasonable recipe for a chilled-out night.

Mars Wine Bar
20-1 Jln PJU 5 / 9 Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Daily, 4pm-1am. Tel: 03-6158-1855

Gold Bar has the potential to be a pleasant, laid-back hangout for craft beer & wine. For now though, the kitchen needs tweaks; we ordered one of the top temptations on the menu - beer siew yok (RM28) - anticipating luscious roast pork bolstered perhaps by robust malty flavours. But the meat teetered on toughness & was marred by an offensive gamy taste. Maybe the other beer-laced dishes fare better - you'll also find chicken wings with cheddar cheese beer sauce & spicy beer garlic prawns.

Gold Bar
P-01-17 Tropicana Avenue, Petaling Jaya. Kitchen opens 6pm daily. Bar opens Mon-Fri, 5pm-12am; Sat-Sun: 3pm-12am

Bliss replaces Sri Hartamas institution Riblee's, maintaining the venue's penchant for pork. Interesting items on the menu include the Maharaja (RM29.90), a serving of pork with undercurrents of Indian spices, served with mint chutney, fruit slaw & sweet potato fries. You'll find offerings with both Eastern & Western inspirations - nasi lemak with pork berempah, pork knuckle in stout-infused stew, plus fried rice with (deep breath) pork lard croutons, Chinese sausage, smoked bacon & luncheon meat.

41-1 Wisma CKL, Jalan 23/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur. Daily, 430pm-2am. Tel: 03-6201-0180

Spitalfield's does a solid job with gastropub-style, hog-focused fare - a meal of six-hour slow-roasted pork roulade (RM36.90), pasta with pulverised pork skin & crispy lard (RM27.90) & sizzling chocolate brownie with ice cream & pork bacon (RM22.90) ensures that no artery goes unclogged.

Atria Shopping Gallery, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Daily, 11am through late. Tel: 012-625-8936
