La Vaca @ Changkat Bukit Bintang
November 11, 2009
El Cerdo might be all about The Pig, but its newly opened sister restaurant, La Vaca, is dedicated to The Cow. This is a fine addition to Changkat, destined to be a mainstay for years to come.
Pan-fried beef bone marrow and butter mushroom on toast. One of the most sinful, cholesterol-laden recipes imaginable, but the melt-in-the-mouth marrow is so, so good.
Fresh oyster baked on onion soubise with beef ham and Swiss cheese. Not the ideal way to appreciate oysters, but tasty enough to seek second or third helpings.
German-style steak tartare. A creamy blend of raw beef with egg and an alcoholic mix.
Ten oz of Wagyu beef rump steak. Not extraordinary, but still a competently executed platter that should please steak lovers.
Braised ox tongue with Madeira sauce. If you can get past the ick factor of eating the tongue of a cow, this is actually quite good. Smooth, tender and mild-tasting, with a well-prepared sauce that provides a kick of extra flavour.
Jumbo Rocky Mountain Oyster Beef Sausage. This might look like a safe, ordinary sausage, but it's really not for the faint-hearted. Stitched together from an unidentified combo of cow innards, it's definitely an acquired taste that we wouldn't rush to recommend.
Idaho baked Russet potato with chilli con carne. Eat this and you'll instantly weigh one pound heavier. But it's worth it. The chilli con carne is extraordinary: fresher, spicier and more satisfying than any other version we've had in the Klang Valley.
