Koosh Koffeez @ Solaris Dutamas

September 18, 2015

Conjuring up notes of razzle-dazzle in its decor & dishes, Koosh Koffeez is an eccentrically colourful venue, exuberant with plush chairs & playful hip-hop caricatures, that takes an adventurous approach to everything from pastas to waffles & coffee.

The menu jumps across genres & boundaries - our favourite recipe here is the Mediterranean Meal (RM21), comprising a flavourful mince of sauteed spiced lamb partnered with Turkish pide flat-bread, hummus, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic aioli, shimeiji & white button mushrooms, salsa & sour cream - an ensemble that's easy to enjoy, with earthy, meaty dimensions.

Lamb features prominently in Koosh Koffeez's repertoire - you can order it in its full, fleshy glory by trying the tender shank basted in a stew of coffee, carrots & onions, drizzled with an espresso glaze & heaped on mashed potatoes (RM45; note that the nuances of coffee prove very subtle) or have it on the Kasablanca pizza, minced & fried with cumin, piled with capsicum, onions, jalapenos & sour cream on a crunchy base of tomato-infused dough (RM25; Koosh's prices seem pretty reasonable).

Pastas are infused with a twist or two too - the Bolognese (chicken or lamb) comes with hints of cinnamon & nutmeg (RM23), while the Karbonara is creamy with an onsen egg & duck bacon (RM23). Other options for comfort food include roasted pumpkin soup with poached cheese ravioli (RM13) & baked escargots with garlic confit & sharp parmesan sauce (RM13).

Koosh takes pride in its unique waffles - hearty ones (RM17-RM20 each), including thoughtfully crafted signatures like James' Brownie (a chocolate waffle laced with brownie pieces, topped with toasted marshmallows, almonds, chocolate-covered strawberries, choc syrup, whipped cream & vanilla ice cream) & Seattle Siren (espresso-infused waffle with torched meringue, frosted walnuts, almonds, whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, salted caramel).

Koosh Koffeez's coffee creations are distinctive as well - the cafe's founders also helm Arabica Estate, a Malaysian company that handles coffee roasting, trading, education (including barista courses), business consultation, equipment & resources (it distributes La San Marco & Bezzera espresso machines among others).

Customers can have fun putting the final touches on the Baller Koffee (RM16), which combines a 'double-dribble' of espresso poured over a whiskey ball, complemented with a choice of creamer or soda (each transforms the mixture into a very different drink). For a photogenic coffee, the Romeo (RM12) might win hearts by presenting a mocha adorned with rose petals. Alcohol is not available, but the virgin Mojito will do. Many thanks to Koosh Koffeez for having us here.
