H&T @ PJ Sea Park & The BBP @ Bukit Utama

November 19, 2015

Checking out two PJ gastropubs with a couple of things in common: Both bear enigmatic acronyms, both feature pork ribs as their prime bait. First up, H&T, which stands for Hungry & Thirsty - it's right to head here ravenous, since the grub is good; the roasted pork rib (RM43) & Cajun-spiced belly skewers (RM13) proved equally succulent & confidently seasoned. We'd have ordered more food (the porchetta pizza, Japanese-inflected miso pork burger & Chinese-influenced braised pork noodles all sound tempting, clearly striving to fulfil the restaurant's very ambitious tagline of 'best babi in town'), but the lycheetini (RM98 for a jug) proved somewhat more syrupy than alcoholic, & wine wasn't available when we visited (though it should be by now).

The BBP ('Big Black Pig,' according to a member of the service team, though 'Best BBQ Pit' appears to be their chosen alternative) is cosy & welcoming, but unfortunately, the food fell far short when we were here. The pork ribs tasted past their prime, with a nearly rank flavour that prevented us from finishing them - they were also undercooked, tough & mainly bony. The bacon wrap skewers, meanwhile, were basically sodium bombs with scant nuance. Both the kitchen & service teams were enthusiastic, eager to please & willing to hear out customers' feedback, so we wish we could have recommended this place.
