Look East: Geno Hotel's flagship Chinese restaurant is a sanctuary of calm for a Lunar New Year meal, worth considering for customers seeking to escape the crowds this season while still savouring a festive feast with family and friends.

East Lake Chinese Restaurant's head chef Lock and his team weave together the classic and the contemporary throughout an a la carte selection that encompasses all the essential elements of CNY auspiciousness. Start with top shell soup, double-boiled to soul-warming perfection, sweetened further with sea coconut and chicken, for a comforting sense of nourishment (RM38).

Poultry pleasure: The kitchen infuses a few fun, playful touches to its fowl dishes - chicken wings come crisp-skinned and juicy-fleshed, vibrantly lively with a dash of Thai-inspired flavours (RM24 for six pieces), while smoked duck served on lotus leaves is bolstered by crunchy mantou, sandwiched with springy vegetables in a mayo-based sauce for a treat of texture and taste (RM6 each, with a minimum order of multiple pieces).

Seafood abounds, befitting the requirements of Chinese New Year: Prawns prove lavish and luscious, coated with Thousand Island dressing and sliced almonds, while the dragon tiger grouper surfaces in a substantial, capably executed portion, firm and smooth (market price).

Greens and grains complete our enjoyable East Lake CNY experience: Leafy fibre accompanies a punchy platter of stir-fried waxed duck and bud mushrooms (RM35), while morsels of chopped prawns complement nearly every spoonful of the signature fried rice (RM42 for a medium-sized serving).
Many thanks to East Lake Chinese Restaurant for having us.
